What is Gingivitis?

What is Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal Disease, Periodontitis or Gum Disease is the progression of Gingivitis. Periodontal Disease is the inflammation around the tooth including not only the gums but also the bone around the teeth. The inflammation of the gums and bone around teeth causing the gums to pull away from the teeth and form spaces called “pockets” that become infected. This infection and inflammation around our teeth causes bone loss around teeth and once this happens we cannot regenerate the bone and we often end up loosing teeth.
What is Scaling and Root Planning?
Scaling and Root Planing, also called a deep cleaning, is the non-surgical treatment of periodontal disease in which the dentist or hygienist remove the plaque and calculus from below the gum line. The root surfaces are cleaned and smoothed with specially designed instruments. It is important to remove the plaque and calculus from the gingival pockets because they are what is causing the inflammation process and infection. Also smoothing the root surface is important since it is easier for bacteria to attach to a rough surface.
